Modifications for the Game Boy Color that I've done include replacing shells and buttons, some painting, frontlit screens (the original model's screen did not light up) either using panels from damaged GBA SP models or using aftermarket light panels. I am not a huge fan of how these lights look compared to the backlights in Game Boy and Game Boy Pocket however it does increase usability of the console. I enjoy shell swaps on these. Game Boy Color is popular with some for chiptune as the processor is capable of handling more complex compositions and it can be modified to eliminate hiss and boost the bass frequencies too. I haven't fully explored these possibilities, nor have I tried the latest kits to install a backlit screen in one but I am keen to try it out soon.
